Oregon Unemployment

Published Friday, March 27, 2020

Unemployment insurance claims are setting new records nationwide and in Oregon. The U.S. Labor Department reported 3.2 million this week. In Oregon, the federal labor department listed the number at 22,800, but that only accounted for processed claims. The Oregon Employment Department reported 76,500 initial claims last week – record levels for our state. Oregon’s Office of Economic Analysis confirmed this is due to the huge number of workers laid off because of COVID-19, and that initial claims will likely remain large for the next few weeks.

The Oregon Employment Department says it is working to address the increase in claims, including improving the online claims system, hiring new employees to work on unemployment claims, offering job seeker employer services, issuing new temporary rules for unemployment insurance benefits flexibility, and an updated website for COVID-19 information
