Oregon Unemployment Claims Outpace the Great Recession Total Job Loss
This week, the Oregon Employment Department reported it received a total of 269,900 unemployment claims in a three week period as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. By comparison, the state saw net job losses of 147,800 jobs in the entirety of the Great Recession.
The state recorded 102,700 initial claims in the week of March 29. Recognizing the challenges many claimants have had in accessing the system, the Employment Department reports that it has quadrupled the number of staff dedicated to processing claims. The $600 CARES Act addition to weekly unemployment benefits should show up by the end of next week.
